Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won Wanstead won by 21 runs.
Match report
Wanstead under 11 Tigers v Upminster
The great religions of the world have their shrines to which the believers flock in their thousands. Images of pilgrims flooding Mecca, the Vatican and Goodison Park are beamed across the media, a clear indication of the significance which these venues hold for the Faithful.. The Fairlop London Playing Fields appear to have a similar magnetic effect on the cricket lovers of East London as Wednesday night heralded the start of the Midweek Under 11 League. The League has a record number of entrants this year, with the possibility, provided the weather behaves itself, that each team could play 13 games. Naturally an awful lot of hard work has taken place and a big vote of thanks must go to the organiser of this whole event, the venerable Mr Len Enoch.
Beautiful sunlight greeted the two captains as they tossed. Upminster elected to bowl first. Conor and George marched to the wicket full of nervous energy and anticipation and the game commenced. Wanstead were soon one man down as the Upminster bowler cut one back off the seam, sending the bails flying towards fine leg. Kassim and Conor then established a nice little partnership, steadying everybody’s nerves, although there were the odd one or two moments were hesitation in the running almost resulted in the loss of a further wicket. Both Conor and Kassim were strong off their legs with one beautiful flick to the fine leg boundary by Kassim staying in the memory. A change of bowler did the trick for Upminster as Luke produced an excellent length ball which resulted in Kassim’s dismissal.
In strode “Deadly Duncan”, who, after a nervous start, batted with increased confidence and authority as the innings progressed. The aggressive running between the wickets by Conor and Duncan put pressure on the opposition and kept the rate ticking over at approximately 6 runs per over. Anything down the leg-side frequently resulted in the ball hurtling towards the boundary for another sumptuously struck four.
As the Wanstead innings approached its conclusion Conor chased a delivery and snicked the ball to the wicket keeper. Without waiting for the umpire to arrive at a decision Conor did the honourable thing and walked. In this age of “Moaning Mourhinio” and “Whinging Wenger” it made me feel extremely proud to see a Wanstead player adopt this course of action. If only certain high profile adults could act in such a principled manner then maybe life would be a little more pleasant.
The Wanstead innings came to an end with Duncan remaining undefeated on 12, having figured in a partnership of 62 with Conor who made 36. 91 –3 from 15 overs was a very good score but would our bowlers be able to bowl well enough in their first game of the season?
Rowan, making his debut for Wanstead, set an excellent standard in the opening over with 6 accurate deliveries which forced the batsman to act with great concentration, as one missed ball would result in dislodged bails. Jayden from the opposite end opened with an over of such pace and hostility that the batsman could not lay bat on ball. It was inevitable that a wicket would soon fall with Rowan bowling one of the openers with a corking delivery. Fortunately the rest of our bowlers followed the example set by our opening two and proceeded to bowl with great accuracy and penetration which forced our opponents to take risks in their running between the wickets. George, who is our wicketkeeper, realized this and after several warning shots successfully ran out the non- striker at the bowlers end with a direct hit from behind the stumps. Upminster’s number 3 batted extremely well, punishing any stray leg-side deliveries and managed to reach 21 before being bowled by a Conor special.
As already mentioned our bowlers performed really well and we restricted Upminster to a final score of 70-3 in their 15 overs. Neel bowled an incredibly accurate over and Jay, after a nervous couple of balls, bowled with accuracy and intelligence. Sam McGrath bowled especially well with his angle of delivery often confusing his opponents. Our fielding tended to be tidy and efficient with Matthew and Abu working really well in the outfield. We must always be ready to back up in the field as this can save valuable runs. Likewise we must remember the importance of accurate bowling as our opponents conceded about 30 runs in extras due to wayward bowling whereas Wanstead conceded something in the region of 12 runs
All in all a really enjoyable game, played in a fantastic spirit by both teams, to which the whole of our team made positive contributions. A special thanks must go to the Wanstead scorer,Will, who is following in that fine tradition set by Mr Brian Clark as regards immaculate presentation of the scoring.
